San Marcos Writers Network

HOW IT WORKS

This website is a place for aspiring writers in and around the City of San Marcos in Central Texas to get their literary works published on the Web for free. According to Wikipedia, “Literature is the art of written works. Literally translated, the word means “acquaintance with letters” (from Latin littera letter). In Western culture the most basic written literary types include fiction and non-fiction.”

HOW IT WORKS

  • This is not your typical blog site but a place for serious authors to submit serious work.
  • You must live or work in the area of Greater San Marcos in Central Texas. You are also eligible to be a part of the San Marcos Writers Network if you have roots in the San Marcos area but temporarily reside elsewhere. The Network Administrator may request information to verify your eligibility.
  • Opinion is not censored but common courtesy and community standards will be considered in deciding whether or not to publish your work.
  • All work must be original and may not have been previously published in any other public forum or media.
  • Once a piece has been published, if you choose to make changes to it, you must indicate the edition number and the year of the new edition. It will be treated as a new submission.
  • We will delete works upon request by the author(s) of those works but not before we verify that the request is legitimate.
  • One or more of our editors will evaluate your work and either accept it or return it to you for continued development.
  • Red strike-through text represents suggested deletions of your original text. Green text represents suggested new or replacement text.
  • Please review “Descriptions of Literary Categories” by clicking on the link at the top of the page. Choose the category that best suits your composition. You may choose only one category. We reserve the right to change the category of your work if we feel that another category is more appropriate. We welcome any suggestions you may have regarding the list of categories and their descriptions.
  • There is no limit to the number of works you may submit but we reserve the right to archive old or unusually large files on alternative sites (with links to those sites). We will notify you of our intent to move your file at least 48 hours in advance.
  • You will retain the Copyright on your works in accordance with established Copyright law. We are not responsible for any violations of your rights as a result of the publication of your work on this site. We recommend you review the document called “Copyright Basics” from the U.S. Copyright Office. For your convenience, we have posted a link to thisdocument at the top of the page. More information is available from http://www.copyright.gov/

GETTING STARTED:

  • Register on the site. Scroll down to the “Register” link on the lower right. You will find it in the “META” section. Create a user name and password. Your user name must be your name or a pen name. That’s all you need to do to start composing your work on the site or submitting completed drafts!
  • Your composition will automatically be submitted in “pending” status. We will review your work and either publish it or save it as a “draft” with suggestions for improvement.
  • All published authors on this site are invited to offer their reviews and constructive critiques after the publication of any work on this site.
  • You may compose your work online (using the built-in WordPress word processor) and submit your piece for publication when you are ready. If you choose this option, we recommend that you save a copy on your PC or on a flash drive for insurance. We perform regular backups of the entire site but we cannot be responsible for any loss of data due to technical issues, equipment failures, divine retribution, etc.
  • If you are using your own word processing program to compose your work (or if you are are submitting work you have composed in the past), you should use “save as” to convert it to plain text before you copy and paste it into the posting window. We suggest using something like Notepad (included on all Microsoft Windows operating systems), which automatically removes any special formatting.
  • DISCLAIMER – THIS WEBSITE IS A WORK IN PROGRESS. PLEASE BE PATIENT WITH US AS WE IDENTIFY AND RESOLVE PROBLEMS. WE ASK THAT YOU NOTIFY US OF ANY PROBLEMS YOU ENCOUNTER OR OTHER THINGS THAT YOU MAY NOTICE.  WE REPORT TECHNICAL GLITCHES TO THE CREATOR(S) OF OUR WORDPRESS THEME AND OF THE VARIOUS PLUGINS THAT PROVIDE ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONALITY. FROM TIME TO TIME, WE WILL UPLOAD NEW VERSIONS OF THE THEME AND THE PLUGINS WE ARE USING. WE MAY WANT TO SWITCH TO A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THEME IF WE FIND ONE WE LIKE MORE. HOWEVER, BEFORE WE MAKE ANY SUBSTANTIVE CHANGES, WE WILL NOTIFY PUBLISHED AUTHORS AND REQUEST THEIR FEEDBACK.
